Lavaux , an exceptional vineyard!

Stretching about 30 km from the Chillon Castle, just south of Montreux, along the south-facing slope of the Lake Geneva banks, to the eastern suburbs of Lausanne in the heart of the canton of Vaud ; the narrow terraces , divided by dry stone walls, cover the lower steep slopes between villages and the lake. Although there is some evidence that vines were grown in Roman times , the present vine terraces date back to the eleventh century , when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. The site is an outstanding example of a centuries-long interaction between humans and their environment, developed to optimize local resources to produce high quality wines that have always been important to the local economy.

The terraced vineyards of Lavaux is a cultural landscape that shows vividly its evolution and development over almost a thousand years through a landscape and buildings well preserved and the continuity and adaptation of longstanding cultural traditions, specific to the area. Also , this landscape demonstrates vividly the authority, control and protection of this highly valued wine growing region , which contributed substantially to the development of Lausanne and its region and played an important role in the history of the geo-cultural region and generated in response to its vulnerability to rapidly growing cities , exceptional popular protection.

Les huit appellations de Lavaux !

Le vignoble de Lavaux et divisé en huit apellations d’origine contrôlées. Le Dézaley et le Calamin au centre, grands crus aux pentes vertigineuses comptent respectivement 54 et 17 hectares. Ce sont les vins les plus riches et complexes de Lavaux. A l’est s’étend la magnifique appellation St-Saphorin avec ses villages pittoresques et ses 125 ha de vignes qui plongent dans le lac Léman. Les vins issus de St-Saphorin révèlent toujours beaucoup de finesse et de subtilité. Puis Chardonne et son coteau de 95 ha profitant des premiers rayons du soleil, emblème de ce charmant village. Plus loin, Vevey-Montreux, 40 ha rassemble les parcelles de plusieurs communes aux alentours de ces villes réputées calmes et accueillantes. A l’ouest du Dézaley s’étend Epesses, village typique dont la réputation n’est plus à faire. 134 ha de vignes sont plantées sur ce terroir puissant donnant des vins corsés et charnus. Vient Villette, terroir graveleux qui donne une belle harmonie à ses vins. avec ses 180 ha, c’est la plus grande des appellation de Lavaux. Pour terminer voilà Lutry, appelation de 40 ha qui domine le vieux bourg historique. La surface viticole totale de Lavaux avoisine les 700 ha. Essentiellement planté en Chasselas, le roi de nos terroirs, le vignoble compte aussi une grande variété de cépages. Ceux-ci sont vinifiés purs ou en assemblage par les vignerons-encaveurs qui se réjouissent de vous faire découvrir leurs grands crus, preuve de la passion qu’ils témoignent à leur métier.
